Los Angeles Times reporter Miles Corwin spent a year in an Los Angeles inner-city school chronicling the lives of the students enrolled in one of their AP classes. The result is And Still We Rise - a book that is both heart warming and heart breaking. Mr. Corwin has done an admirable job of drawing a word picture of the challenges and victories of this handful of high school seniors. These students face odds that are often insurmountable as they live, work and study in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in our nation. Tangentially, we learn about the lives of some of their teachers and administrators as they go against the flow and encourage these particular students to strive for college admission. This book will give readers a reason to think twice before underestimating the difficulty of chasing the often elusive American dream.
