52 Books in 52 Weeks - Book 39 The Clothes on Their Backs
Linda Grant's novel is a coming of age story. Vivian Kovacs is the daughter of Hungarian refuges that settled in London, England. Vivian longs for a more complete life than her reserved parents have to offer, and so she braves the world from which her parents have consistently shielded her. Her mysterious uncle appears and lends complexity and depth to some of the decisions that she must make. I chose to read this story a bit interesting due to the fact that my grandmother was a Hungarian refugee to the USA, however the reader needs to be aware that this is not a piece of historical fiction as minimal historical context is provided.
