Weekly Report: Week 1

Due to ongoing work on our house, we had a soft start to our school year. We had a painting crew in here at the beginning of the week, so I decided we would kick of the school year by having Rocket Boy complete some outstanding merit badges. He worked on Fingerprinting, Space Exploration and Cinematography.

It would be difficult to decide which he had more fun with.  As part of the requirements for the Space Exploration merit badge, he had to design a base on another planet, so he designed a colony on Jupiter. He has detailed drawings of the base as well as a great write up on how they would get all of the supplies needed for life. He spent far more time researching and writing this than I expected. For Cinematography, he had to write and film a video. The complete process was required to be documented, so he has story boards, scripts and a great stop motion lego film. Again, a lot of thinking, planning and writing went into this process. His diligence was amazing! Fingerprinting was the badge with the least number of requirements to finish, so it was mainly a matter of paperwork.

On Wednesday, he had his first class for Speech and Debate. It will be a semester long class and then in the spring they will start competing in qualifying tournaments. I am uncertain what categories he is leaning towards, competition wise, but the experience should be a fun one!

Although we are not entirely finished with the house (we have a handyman coming next week and books still to move), we will start our more traditional schedule next week, while still trying to leave some time to eek out more summer fun.

Wow. I think my 8yo son would have loved that base on Jupiter. LOL. He is obsessed with space stuff right now. :-) What a wonderful week of pursuing fun topics.
